Vandalization of Saraswati Idol in Narasaraopet – False Claims

On the 6th of October 2020, an FIR was registered at Narasaropet Police Station against Challa Madhusudhan Reddy from the Telugu Desam Party for spreading false information to create communal tension in Andhra Pradesh. He uploaded a photograph of a partly damaged Saraswati idol in one of his whatsapp groups and said that the idol was desecrated by miscreants near Sankara Matham. His story claimed that liquor was poured on the idol and that it was defaced. It also claimed that the idol was set afire. This message was later found on AP Media, a telegram group with 68000 members. Within hours, the post went viral and was picked up by the media. Upon investigation, it was found that the idol has been in that damaged condition for the last two years.

The official Twitter account of Guntur Rural District Police uploaded a tweet calling it ‘fake news’. Guntur Rural SP also gave an explanation about the damage. He further said that any person spreading fake news on social media platforms with the intention to incite communal tension will be prosecuted.
