Fact Check – Old Photos of Temple Vandalization in Eluru Reshared to Incite Communal Tension
On 19th January 2021, a few social media handles were found uploading pictures of a desecrated idol of Lord Anjaneya Swamy from a temple in Eluru, West Godavari. The pictures also showed broken doors of the temple. Although the posts did not mention when the incident occurred, it is implied that the pictures were uploaded to stir communal tension in Andhra Pradesh.
Taking note of this, the official Twitter handle of the West Godavari Police immediately responded, stating that the images were almost seven years old. In 2014, an FIR was registered in Eluru 1 Town police station regarding this and the accused Peraka Venkateswara Rao faced 8 months of imprisonment as well. The West Godavari police have registered a case in Cr. No. 24/2021 U/s 153-A, 295-A of the Indian Penal Code against those who re-uploaded these images to spread misinformation.
It came to our notice that some persons on social media are using this 2014 incident as propaganda material for spreading fake news. We have registered a case in Cr. No. 24/2021 U/s 153-A, 295-A IPC against such people. (2/2) @AndhraPradeshCM @AndhraPradeshHM @FactCheckAPGov pic.twitter.com/i7hmKxica3— West Godavari Police (@SpWestgodavari) January 19, 2021
